All students in the Stevenson Program start at the Beginning Level and move through the Basic Blue Level to the Intermediate. Teachers, however, can start the program at either the Beginning or Basic Blue levels. Depending on age and learning style, students will move through the first level at different rates and use different amounts of material.

The Core Materials

THE BEGINNING GREEN LEVEL

Beginning Green Teacher's Manual This book contains 36 lessons that cover 102 integrals (language units).  Skills include Reading, Spelling, Vocabulary Building, Phonemic Awareness, Comprehension, Printing, Keyboarding and Grammar.  Numerous reproducible appendices provide valuable tools.  The new Beginning Green Level, like the old one, uses the unique Stevenson mnemonic clues to teach two major long vowel constructions - the CVVC peanut butter and jelly words and the CVCV layer cake words.  It also covers many variations on these structures and other key words.  Unlike the old Beginning Level, the new manual is cross-referenced to the Lonely Vowels books to facilitate the introduction of short vowel words at the Beginning Level.  The new manual is also cross-referenced to all the other Beginning level materials, like the teaching cards, reading books, workbooks, mastery tests and more.  Each lesson provides several teaching activities in separate parts and finishes with sections like Hints on Timing, Modifications and Commentaries.  This manual includes greater detail on addressing specific learning problems than the old Beginning book.  The new Beginning Green manual has a format that is very similar to the Basic Blue. BEG 101

Beginning Green Reading Book One This reusable book contains the stories, sentences and word lists needed to practice the reading skills taught in Lessons 1-18 of the Beginning Green Teacher's Manual.  The reading material in the new Beginning Level has been completely revised.  Selections are more varied, with some highly controlled and carefully coordinated to each integral and others more flexible and fun.

This book contains directives for teaching the reading of numerous word groups that cover dozens of different vowel patterns. It also teaches many other language skills such as answering questions in complete sentences, identifying parts of speech, capitalization and punctuation. Special sections help teachers who did not use the first level of the program follow through with students who did. The manual contains 52 lessons. Each lesson begins with a brief summary, a list of the materials needed to teach the lesson and hints on timing. All lessons end with cross-references to the reading book and workbook pages needed for reinforcement as well as an Additional Suggestions section if you feel extra work is needed. There is also an optional Commentary section that can add valuable perspective. The manual has several appendices which provide additional teaching resources.

A Taste of Our Mnemonic Instruction

The Stevenson Program uses visual clues to help teach the full range of word attack skills, from learning letters to recognizing vowel patterns to unlocking multi-syllable words. Here you see the mnemonic clue that teaches the letter c.  Along with this clue, Stevenson provides multi-sensory activities and direct instruction to elicit the hard sound of c and associate it with the letter shape. This approach to sound/symbol correspondence is thorough, but not unique. The Stevenson Program, however, takes this approach a step further. Click below to learn more.
