The Stevenson Program is used effectively in a variety of settings in both general and special education, but neither the program nor the setting would matter without good teachers.
In this case, teacher Kelly O’Connell and aide Kathy Restuccia from the Montgomery Township schools have created a very special setting for their LLD class. The word wall comes alive. It has been transformed into a “Stevenson Reading Sea.” As peanut butter and jelly words swim around, each vowel pattern creates a school of fish. Many sandwich words are involved in other ways. One school of fish swims through a reef and passes by a
mermaid. Sailboats sail past a seal. Other schools swim by a surfboard and a gray whale. Some fish are caught in
coastal waves with sailfish, and come upon a manatee, a sea horse, and a sea turtle. You can get soaking wet at the beach, which is filled with chairs, pails, and palm trees swaying in the breeze. And one day, all of these things were brought in to create a real beach atmosphere. Kelly and Kathy have applied their own creativity to realize the real potential of Stevenson, and we thank them for sharing their excellent work with us.
