New Multifaceted Books for Teaching Letters

Although some children enter school with a command of the alphabet, most require time, effort and patience to learn their letter sounds and shapes with mastery. Certain students struggle with the process, and, in serious situations, that struggle can last for several years. We have produced two new books that use the Stevenson teaching principles to support any student who needs help with letters. Whether the child is just beginning Kindergarten or needs assistance in the upper grades, whether the student is having difficulty with printing, visual letter recognition or phonemic awareness, Stevenson’s Letters can help. The teacher’s manual provides specific step-by-step instructions in several areas and Stevenson’s Letters Printing Workbook offers valuable practice with handwriting, which stymies many young children. These books will be ready for distribution on April 2, 2004.

If you are familiar with the Beginning Level of Stevenson, you will quickly see how the new teacher’s manual can be used. It offers greater detail on teaching the letters as well as a wonderful variety of activity suggestions for reinforcing them. These activities include hands on projects, multisensory tasks, games and more. They are specifically designed to improve phonemic awareness, visual discrimination and retrieval. Best of all, these activities help children have fun learning. You can use the Stevenson’s Letters manual to supplement the work you already do with the Beginning One Teacher-Student Manual or you could use it as an alternative way to start the program. The introduction to the new manual (which has been posted on the web site) describes various alternatives. We have also had many requests for a separate printing practice workbook that uses Stevenson techniques. This workbook will fill that need.

If you are not familiar with the Stevenson Program, these books could be a useful way to learn about it. If you are a Kindergarten teacher, you could use it as a basic guide for teaching letters to all your students, or, use it as an additional resource just for your students who are not easily learning letters by the methods you currently use. First grade teachers will appreciate having the manual on hand to help them with their students who simply did not master letter recognition. And, if your students struggle with printing the conventional way, try the Stevenson approach to reduce frustrations. In fact, we think it is likely that many teachers will purchase the new books simply to have a way of teaching printing that is simple and effective.

Stevenson’s Letters Teacher’s Manual includes 40 lessons and 17 appendices. Each lesson gives instructions in three basic areas: sound/symbol correspondence, phonemic awareness and printing. Each lesson concludes with an Activities section that suggests fun ways to reinforce letter knowledge. Stevenson’s Letter’s Printing Workbook provides 106 pages of important handwriting practice for lowercase and uppercase letters. Most pages are broken down into manageable subsections. We highly recommend that you use the new books in conjunction with The Beginning Level Teaching Cards, although illustrations are included in the manual that allow you to make your own card set as needed.

Of course, the new materials use the same teaching methods as the rest of the Stevenson Language Skills Program. Mnemonic clues make it easier (and more fun) to remember letter sounds. Letter sounds are emphasized over letter names (though both are taught) to reduce sound/symbol confusion. Multisensory instruction is used, and both the clues and the special sequence helps student overcome weak auditory processing.

You will find item codes and prices of the new books below, an order coupon on the back page, and a full order form inside. A PDF copy of the introduction to the manual is posted under “Latest News” on our web site. As usual, if you have questions, call us toll free at 1-800-343-1211.
