Recent Article from Spring 2006:

A New Beginning - Sept. 1, 2006

The five principal books in the Beginning Level of the Stevenson Language Skills Program are now being thoroughly revised and updated, and we plan to distribute the new editions on September 1, 2006. We have been working on this revision for some time. The changes will be much more than cosmetic. The new Beginning Green Teacher’s Manual will have a different format from the original Beginning Level Manual. It will look much like the Basic Blue Core Manual, but have a few additional sections. Each lesson will begin with a summary of the content, a list of materials and the Stevenson Integral numbers. The lesson will move on to teaching activities, which usually come in three or four parts. Most teaching activities are coordinated to the current Beginning Level Teaching Cards (which will not be revised). With some students you can expect to cover two or more teaching activities in a single teaching session. With others you can only expect to cover one. The essential teaching directives and dialogues are accompanied by comments and illustrations in the margin. After each teaching activity, you will find icons with a list of the appropriate reading book and workbook pages used for reinforcement. After the instructional sections, lessons offer additional guidance in sections like Hints on Pacing, Modifications, Additional Reinforcement, Keyboard Work and Commentary. Many lessons also cross reference other Stevenson materials like the Mastery Management Tests and the Supplementary Reader Set (which are not being revised). At the end of each lesson are reduced versions of the students’ reading book pages with margin comments. Following each lesson there is a short outline which will facilitate lesson plans. Some experienced Stevenson teachers will even be able to use the outline as a teaching guide. The manual also includes useful appendices that you can photocopy and use in class. The new editions of Beginning Green Reading Book One and Workbook A correlate with the first 18 lessons of the Teacher’s Manual. Reading Book Two and Workbook B correlate to the last 18 Lessons. The reading content has been revised considerably for the new books (see the newsletter article entitled “The Contradictions of Reading Content”). Almost every workbook page is also new, and the graphics are more polished. The new Workbook A contains less work on letters and more on words and sentences than the old one. Please note that you will not be able to use the new reading or workbook with the old manual, or use the old reading and workbooks with the new manual. For prices and other details on ordering the new books, see newsletter article titled “Important Ordering Information.”
